Swing Street Big Band

Swing Street was founded about 17 years ago here in the Rio Grande Valley by a group of Winter Texans. The band was originally named The Society For The Preservation of Big Band Music and later changed to Swing Street. Players from MN, IA, IL etc. pooled together arrangements they brought with them from home. Some of them crafted some homemade music stands out of plywood, painted them white and hand lettered the band name on the fronts in blue. They were used through the past season. Because their main audience was Winter Texans, as were the musicians, their season ran from mid-December through mid-March. The band was quite popular for several years and drew sizable crowds, playing in seasonal RV Resorts around the Valley. As of 2013/2014 the band has reorganized with new leadership, new music stands and lights, new sound system, new younger musicians recruited from the McAllen Symphonic Band (Town Band) as well as some seasoned professional Winter Texans. Most importantly, the old music library has been replaced with updated music Yes, we will still play a few old standards like “In The Mood”, but we will be mostly playing tunes that were popular when most Winter Texans were in high school, including movie and TV themes, as well as show tunes all in a very “danceable” format. This 17 piece big band features 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, keyboard, bass, drums and guitar. We have quite a following of ballroom dancers and this is a perfect group for any park with a large dance floor.
