History, Hill Country, Wildflowers, Wine

Dear Travel Friends,

After a few years of being asked if I would plan a trip to Fredericksburg for our Winter Texans, last year I finally pulled the trigger. The trip sold out quickly, and we couldn’t have had a better group with us.

Some people don’t know just how many wineries there are in the Fredericksburg area: over 100, if you can believe that. It’s becoming the second largest wine-tourism destination in the U.S. very quickly, second only to Napa Valley in California.

We visit several unique wineries on this tour that all have something a little different to offer. One of our favorites was Pontotoc Picnic Table. This vintage location channels all the nostalgia of a 1950s gas station stop. It’s been restored to highlight the vintage charm of its heyday. The owners made us a delicious, from-scratch meal to go with our wine pairings, and if I remember correctly, maybe a bottle of her famous sangria came home with us!

Fredericksburg is also home to the largest wildflower farm in the U.S. It is over 1000 acres and produces hundreds of thousands of pounds of wildflower seeds every year. They cultivate over 40 species of flowers, including bluebonnets, poppies, zinnias, and more. Wild Seed Farms is a big highlight of the area, with a darling shop, seeds for purchase, and great information on planting and growing flowers in our region. This is a stop we’re adding to the tour this year. The tour was such a hit last year that people wanted to stay longer and have some more time in town. This year’s tour added an extra night and day to the itinerary to allow us to visit a few more places around the area–including Wildseed Farms.

If we’re up in the Hill Country, no trip would be complete without visiting Luckenbach, Texas. Not only will we stop in to see if we can spot Willie and the gang, but we’ll have a private dance instruction in their famous Dance Hall. For you history/military fans, we also wouldn’t miss the chance to visit the Pacific War Museum. We’ll enjoy a tour of the facility and hear all about the impact it had on the world.

There’s too much fun to highlight it all, but there is something for everyone on this trip. If you’re interested in visiting this darling Hill Country town and learning all about its history, wine industry…and more, join us before all the spaces fill up. Take a look at the details on the website at welcomehomergv.com. I’m sure you’ll see that this trip is something fun you’ll want to add to your Winter Texan itinerary this season.
