Culture, History, and Butterflies Galore Await in Mexico!
Story and Photos by Eryn Reddell Wingert
The McAllen International Airport is the gateway to the wonders of Mexico City, Mexico!
Travel by Welcome Home has hosted adventures into this vibrant and fascinating country. One excursion included a direct flight into Mexico City complete with transportation from Benito Juarez International Airport; hotel accommodations at the Sheraton Maria Isabel; and a MexiTours guide and driver.
The members of the group included local RV resort residents, Welcome Home RGV representatives, and the daughter of one couple who flew in from out of state to join her parents on the trip.
The first full day travelers ventured beyond the city to experience the winter destination for millions of monarch butterflies; traveling to Piedra Herrada Monarch Sanctuary.
Singular monarchs were spotted from the bus upon arrival. More and more were spotted as the majority of the group hiked – one couple opted for the horseback option – up to the butterflies’ mass-wintering spot.
The consensus: it was worth the trip! Thousand and thousands of monarchs clinging together in giant clumps, weighing down the branches of tall pine trees, while thousand more flittered through the air.
At the end of the day’s adventures, one traveler shared, “It exceeded my expectations.”
Further stops on the agenda included the National Museum of Anthropology; the Teotihuacan pyramids; the Basilica of our Lady of Guadalupe; and the historic downtown Mexico City. Plus, a performance of Folkloric Ballet.
