Roma to Rio Grande City: A Day of Flavor, Culture, and Hidden Gems

Day Three of our Activity Director Boot Camp uncovered two of the region’s standout gems: the art of agave at Ancestral Craft Spirits in Roma and the rich heritage of Rio Grande City through its historic trolley tour and museum.

Our annual Boot Camp is designed to introduce RV resort Activity Directors to unique attractions across the Rio Grande Valley—helping them discover new experiences they can confidently book for their residents throughout the season.

At Ancestral Craft Spirits—tucked into the heart of historic Roma—our group enjoyed a guided deep dive into traditional agave distillation, where old-world craftsmanship meets bold, modern expression. We sampled all three varieties of mezcal, learned about the production process, and snacked on pulled-pork nachos and sliders.

After an “incredible” lunch at Caro’s, we continued west to Rio Grande City for a rolling history lesson aboard the iconic Bessie III Trolley, winding through downtown and historic Fort Ringgold.

We wrapped up the afternoon at the Kelsey Bass Museum, where exhibits highlighted the diverse cultural heritage of Starr County—an engaging stop for all ages and interests.

It was a day filled with flavor, history, culture, and connection—an unforgettable addition to our Boot Camp itinerary.
